WHAT OUR CLIENTS THINK_

We rock. It's official. We asked a number of our regular clients and collaborators to write something for our website. Many of them wrote lovely things. Obviously, we threw away the rubbish ones.
Pere Battle asked me to produce another of his rather unusual electronic music tracks.
He makes all the raw sounds manually, using a digital multitracker and room full of synthesisers. He first creates a kick drum pattern - for ten minutes (!) - then layers one by one new tracks, ALL PLAYED MANUALLY. This takes him ages to get right - if he makes a mistake, he starts again - but also gives him a unique, fluid groove and a highly personal sound.
With his tracks, I tidy up and help him select the best of the raw material, tame the raw energy of the analogue synths, balance everything, add effects, including heavy use of delays and deep reverbs with sidechained compressors, and together we cut out a structure. For instance, check out the reverberated buildup around 3:50.
Then, internet-punky style, we quickly create a random video out of images off his mobile phone and upload it onto Youtube.

Phasmes - Pere Battlo 2005

This is an interesting abstract composition that we mixed. A very odd sounding collage of fragments made in a very Lo-Fi way.
Pere would locate fragments of recordings made on cassete dictaphone over many years, and manually recorded onto a digital recorder every fragment one at a time. If he wanted to repeat something he rewound the tape machine and ran it in again. No looping, no cut and paste, no digital effects, no plug ins, no beats per minute...
The results are very pretty I think and sounds much more interesting than clean, modern, loopy music productions.
