ABOUT BCNSOUND

Bcnsound is a team of musicians, headed by Simon Smith, who provide original composition, music production, recording and audio pre and post-production services for recording artists, film makers and brands.

In 2012 Bcnsound moved to new premises, a boutique central Barcelona recording studio that backs onto a private terrace with an exclusive view of a 14th century church - a creative oasis only 100m from the hustle and bustle of the famous “ramblas”.

The space has been designed and set up by musicians for musicians and other creatives - a comfortable, professional working environment within the growing musical pulse at the heart of Barcelona.

SHIP'S CAPTAIN

SIMON SMITH

A producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Scotland, Simon has worked as a professional musician and independent producer since 1995, first in London and now in Barcelona since 2002.

After studying piano, gaining a Masters in composition, he cut his teeth in London releasing records under the name of Odd Toot with Hydrogen Dukebox Records and working as a session drummer and programmer with James Hardway amongst others, touring internationally to Europe and the USA.

After moving to Barcelona, in the last few years Simon has built up Bcnsound to concentrate on composing and music production for other artists and original music for media, brands, film and TV. He worked on the score for the feature Rastres de Sandal by director Maria Ripoll, that won Best Picture at the Premis Gaudís 2015 in Spain. Maria then invited him to work with her on award winning comedian Dani Rovira's second feature, Ahora o Nunca that topped the box office charts.

THE CREW

ERIC NAGEL: chief engineer

Eric Nagel is a sound engineer and music producer raised on the island of Ibiza by german and french parents. After immersing himself in the electronic music scene on the island, he gained excellent training in recording and production at SAE Institute Barcelona and since then has worked on a wide variety of projects from deep electronic tracks, classic remixes, chill out/lounge and world music fusion through to mixing documentaries and classical music recordings as an engineer. He recently travelled to Dehli (india) during recording and production of various world music projects for Sony Music Entertainment (India).

CORDELIA ALEGRE: producer

At Bcnsound Cordelia is the organised one, working with us part-time as producer, project coordinator, communication and promotion strategy and client development.

Born in Barcelona, she is passionate about documentary and story telling. She recently finished the Audiovisual Communication degree at Pompeu Fabra University, developing shorts and feature length documentaries, while also studying classical cello at the Municipal Music Conservatory in Badalona. She also works on many media projects, including time as director's assistant for film director María Ripoll.

She is currently enrolled in the 2 year documentary filmmaking masters course at UPF, where she is developing her latest feature length project.

MALDI GRAMAL

Executive producer, director of Aguazero cultural festival and lifelong musician.

Maldi sprouts from the indigenous mountains of Ecuador playing a variety of stringed and wind instruments. Now a longtime resident of Barcelona, as former director/owner of RCM records Maldi has produced a catalogue of more than 40 albums, Including 4 personal musical projects. In 2002 Maldi instigated the revival of a cultural festival in Otalvalo, Ecuador. “Aguazero” now in it’s 10th year with Maldi as director/coordinator has grown to acommodate attendances of up 20.000, government funding and international performers.

BRENDEN SMITH

A versatile multi-instrumentalist from Sydney, Australia with over 2000 live performances worldwide to his credit, Brenden is also composer, musician, producer and engineer. He also designs his own guitars and browses ebay for random musical toys and vintage microphones.

Making music his whole life, with a track from his very first home-recorded CD he won the “mixed on a Mackie” audio engineering competition in 1995. In 1999 Brenden moved to Barcelona and worked as in-house engineer and session musician for RCM records, recording and producing numerous projects of world music from indigenous peoples of North and South America.

Recent projects include work for spanish TV, brand campaigns and numerous feature length documentary soundtracks as well as playing screaming keyboards in a monster funk band as his alter-ego Chuck Fernandez.

BASIL HOGIOS

Basil is a prolific composer, musical director, pianist, and sound designer for the stage and screen, working in Australia, Europe and the US. He is known for his unique sound, an inventive crossing of musical genres set in evocative sonic atmospheres. Recently, Basil composed for his second feature film in Australia, and 2 feature documentaries in Italy. For the stage, he was the co-composer and arranger for the Dreamworks live arena show of How To Train Your Dragon, after working on over 50 theatrical productions in Australia. He has also composed for many short films, television shows and commercials. He is now based in Barcelona and Sydney.
