ABOUT BCNSOUND

Bcnsound is a central Barcelona music production space owned and operated by Simon Smith. I have worked as a professional musician and independent producer since 1995, first in London and now in Barcelona since 2002.

In the last few years I have specialized in original music for media, brands, film and TV. However I also have a long history of collaborating with recording artists and on many other projects where creative audio production and musicianship is needed.

My work falls into various key categories:

  • original composition, music production, scoring and song writing
  • recording artist development, production and arranging
  • sound design and audio interaction design
  • recording, mixing and premastering

I invite you to browse the works section of this site, where the projects can be filtered by work done, client type, year and more.

ABOUT THE STUDIO

I was always taught that my most important tools are my ears, my imagination and my experience. However, in terms of equipment my best investment has been in my Klein and Hummel O300D speakers which offer me extremely detailed and unflattering sound quality for fast and accurate mixing and production. I actually don't know how I worked without them before.

BIOGRAPHY

I have always been a music freak. I went to london to study music at Goldsmiths, which included classical piano with John Tilbury, the reknowned british free improvisation pioneer. While completing my degree, my first experiments in home studio production (Odd Toot) were signed to Hydrogen Dukebox Records.

During work on my Masters in Composition I developed a second album, and worked as a session musician, most notably as drummer with producer David Harrow's jazz/drum and bass outfit The James Hardway Quartet.

I was lucky enough to play Glastonbury UK and many other festivals around the world with Hardway, which was a great experience and a lot of fun. The Hardway team included at various times Theo Gordon (Roots Manuva), London jazz veteran bassist Miles Danso and singer/songwriter Amanda Ghost, (who afterwards co-wrote the James Blunt hit "Your Beautiful").

It was with Hardway that I first came to Barcelona, Spain, to play as part of the BAM '98 festival. I really loved the city, but didn't realise then that I would have my future studio about 100 yards from where we played.

In 2002 I moved to Barcelona and set up Bcnsound, working on music production for other recording artists, film, TV, advertising and several other personal projects.
